After moving to Antwerp six months ago, and coming here for many years, I really wanted to discover some of the city's hidden gems, its lesser known places most people don't get to see. And to do so, I got myself a City Card! It gives you free entry in 17 museums and 4 historical churches, as well as free use of public transport. The perfect bargain to discover Antwerp's cultural patrimony that goes far beyond the Rubens House and the Cathedral of Our Lady. Follow me!
One of my greatest joys is being a tourist in my own country. And this city guide is a fine example of that since I'm taking you to the city center of the Belgian capital! Brussels has many different facets and I'm happy to introduce to you some of the best it has to offer. Expect some of my favorite shopping venues, the most famous sights of the city and an exceptional place to stay in the middle of it all. Because being a tourist is actually the best way to approach any place, since it means doing so with a curious mind and innocent eyes!
With my fascination for mermaids and beaches, I feel very much drawn to the seaside. And when you're talking about the Belgian coast, Blankenberge quickly comes to mind, as it is our second biggest seaside resort. The city has a beautiful heritage from its Belle Époque glory (which I'm very sensitive to) but that's not the only thing it has to offer. There really is something for everyone in Blankenberge, whether it is culture, shopping, gastronomy or beach bars! Since the city is rather small, there is no pressure and you can easily go from one point to another by foot. And with its 'Happy to sea you' spirit, the city is known to be warm and welcoming!
Inside and outside of Germany, Hannover isn't quite known for being the place to be. Which is unfortunate really, because it means most people miss out on the nice surprises the city has in store! Thanks to its big university, Hannover is a very lively place, with lots of festivals and events happening throughout the year. Fairy tale fans will be over the moon about the Royal Gardens and the nearby Marienburg Castle. And with a few strong female characters having left their mark on the city, Hannover could even be described as feminist. Lots to discover obviously and I'm happy to be your guide!
This trip to Krakow was my 1st acquaintance with Poland and I couldn't have imagined a better one! Poland's former capital is one of elegance: from the authentic charm of the Old City, to the peaceful escapism of the Vistula River, to the hipster vibes of the former Jewish district. Never have I witnessed such a religious place, from the countless churches to the priests and nuns everywhere, yet the city is the most approachable. Its relatively small size means you can do everything by foot and you'll never feel lost. Add a low cost of living to this and you got yourself the perfect - alternative - getaway!
Another great thing about living in Belgium is that there is so much to discover just beyond the borders. Case in point: Zuid-Limburg. This Dutch region that's adjacent to Belgium in the East isn't quite like the rest of the Netherlands and holds many surprises. With its mix of nature, history and contemporary lifestyle, it has something in store for everyone. Let me guide you through Zuid-Limburg the 'Gerrit and the City' way, meaning a little street art, some design, fabulous food and a trip to the province's fashionable capital Maastricht!
In terms of investments, I'm very much like Carrie Bradshaw: "I like my money right where I can see it, hanging in my closet". You can take that quite literally, as I took advantage of my big, open bedroom to store and display all my fashion acquired over the years.
The dining table is a piece of furniture of which the importance is not to be underestimated. After all, you will be spending some of your best times eating and chatting with your friends sitting around it, so you want to make sure it suits you. Having to deal with a circular room, it quickly became clear to me my dining table would have to be round. And I found all the inspiration I needed to chose one on Pinterest...
I have to admit, my life can be quite hectic at times. Now don't get me wrong: I want it that way and I love it! But it does emphasize my need for a bed that signals nothing but serenity and calm. I achieved this through a minimal, shabby chic design and luxurious, white sheets.
