South Tyrol

'Gerrit and the City' is all about escapism. Sometimes I take you to unexplored cities and sometimes I take you to more remote places. Consider this my first 'Gerrit and the Mountains' piece as I introduce you to South Tyrol, the region located in the Alps of Northern Italy. A region that's all about contrasts: Alpine and Mediterranean, German-Austrian and Italian, traditional and contemporary. There is nothing quite like finding yourself in this sumptuous mountain landscape to escape everything and refocus on yourself. And when you're feeling a cosmopolitan urge, the capital Bolzano is right there for you!

The French Provence • Part two

My family vacay in the Provence was such a dream because it was the perfect mix of chilling and discovering. Days wandering cobbled streets were alternated with days by the pool. So for your stay I would definitely recommend picking a place that has a picture perfect swimming pool, such as Ferme Michel, our Airbnb. Its location near the Mont Ventoux also allowed us to do all those day trips with car rides under one hour.

The French Provence • Part one

When I say cicadas and lavender, what is the first thing that comes to your mind? That's right, the Provence! A poetic region in the South of France and a getaway for many lucky ones in summer. With its wild nature and idyllic landscapes, it is a haven of serenity. While at the same time, the many picturesque villages scattered across the region offer plenty of options for discovery. It can be daunting to approach a region this big, so in true 'Gerrit and the City' fashion, I made up a few day trips for you. Enjoy!

Down on the West Coast • Part two

The first part of the trip was rather intense, moving from one place to another every day over large distances. The second part of the trip was more laid-back and we enjoyed Californian city life to the fullest. We went to Western USA during the second half of April and it turned out to be the perfect period for us. Not only because it is still the low season, meaning less people and lower accommodation prices, but also because the spring temperatures were a real delight, nor too warm, nor too cold.

Down on the West Coast • Part one

I've been a fan of Lana Del Rey for years. I feel close not only to her music, but also to her unique aesthetic, best shown in clips such as "Ride" and "West Coast". The freedom of the open road, Los Angeles, palm trees, the coast... So many things I used to fantasize about. Which is why this vacation across Western USA together with my boyfriend felt like a dream come true. Over two weeks, we drove more than 4500 km, stayed at charming Airbnb's and saw the most amazing and diverse landscapes.
